Abstract: The Frances Fay Brunstein Papers consist of personal papers of Frances Fay Brunstein Levine who traveled extensively as an
economist for the United States government in the 1950's. The papers include Frances' own writings and correspondence, travel
brochures from her travel in Asia and elsewhere, an extensive collection of propaganda from Asian nations, Latin American
nations, and the United States.
Biographical/Historical note
Frances Fay Brunstein was born on August 26, 1918 in Los Angeles, California. She attended Los Angeles City College and received
her B.A. in Political Science with an emphasis on International Relations from UCLA in 1938. She continued her education at
UC-Berkeley, getting an M.A. in Political Science (International Relations) in 1939 and attending one year of Law School during
1939-1940. She was a member of Pi Kappa Delta, a national honorary fraternity for students interested in speech and debate,
and Phi Rho Pi, a national honor society for speech competitors in two year colleges.
After graduation, she moved to Washington, D.C. and worked for various government bodies, such as the Inter-American Statistical
Institute, the Census Bureau, the Board of Economic Warfare, the Foreign Economic administration, and the U.S. Labor Department.
She served a stint as Acting Club Director of American Red Cross in Europe during World War II. In 1951 she moved back to
Los Angeles to work for the Office of Price Stabilization. She moved from there to the Latin American Institute at UCLA and
worked on the preparation of the Statistical Abstract of Latin America.
From 1956-59 she traveled extensively gathering economic and political data in over 50 countries. The bulk of the collection
is the printed material she gathered during these travels. Since this was during the height of the Cold War, the collection
gives a picture of U. S. and foreign propaganda during the period and data on industry, production, and wages in the United
States and in countries around the world with an emphasis on Southeast Asia and Central and South America.
Brunstein passed away on October 10, 1996 in Los Angeles, CA. She was 78.

Scope and Contents note
The Frances Fay Brunstein Papers consist of personal papers, including Frances' own writings and correspondence, travel brochures
from her travel in Asia and elsewhere, an extensive collection of propaganda from Asian nations, Latin American nations, and
the United States that she gathered as an economist for the United States government. Most of the travel brochures and propaganda
are from the Cold War era and relate directly to the Cold War. Many of these are press releases, published pamphlets and
magazines, and reports.
