Elio Marchese lived at the turn of that century (see Ch 170; Ta 3:1:26, 3: 6:21). The learned scribe who made our copy (he signs himself Ant. Feltrius, but is usually known under his Italian name d'Afeltro; he died in 1562 - see DA l:103; M 1:l64; Sr 253; Ta 3:1:4; To 23) has left the original text untouched but added numerous signed notes in the wide margins. • Factum pro Ectore, Io. Baptista, & Io. Antonio de Alaneo cum Platea Nobilium Illust. Sedilis Nidi. - Early or mid 17th century, folio; title and 5 pp. on 4 ff.
The documents themselves, summarized in the printed agreement, trace the family's history from c. 1200, A printed fragment contains the same text in a different get-up, with a printed genaeological chart of the family. This seems to have been a proof, or part of a printed claim put before the Council (the text of which would then seem to be integrated into the final agreement).

. no. 1 1711

Physical Description: - Folio manuscript, 1711, title and 348 pp.
Physical Description: Very neatly written, 21 - 24 lines to the page, in two or three different well - trained hands.

Scope and Content Note

An essay on the workings of the Inquisitional Tribunals and of the danger of this institution being recognized and introduced in the Kingdom of Naples. The work, according to the preface expressing the number of prominent citizens, is divided into a great number of chapters, each of which deals with a separate legal or moral aspect of the Inquisition - type of justice. Notable (and for the whole tone of the text revealing) chapters 1. on the tolerance of the sect (i.e. the Jesuits); 4, 5 & 9: punishment of heretics according to the spirit of the Scriptures & the Church & and secular law; 6. whether a king comes under secular or ecclesiastical law; 7. whether secular justice can ask for a copy of eccles. procedure in order to reconsider a specific case; 10-11: the edicts of Frederic II and the new forms of Inquisition; 12. an examination of the case against the Inquisition. This last chapter occupies pages 190-348 and is itself divided into 14 'articles', some of which present startlingly modern legal questions: qualifications of the court; procedure; compulsory denunciation; penal treatment of the King and worldly power; proof and its presentation; credibility of testimonies; number and conformity of same; the suppression of the names of informants and witnesses; confessions of the King etc.; torture; the 'negative' heretic (i.e.who denies having willfully and maliciously challenged the authority of the Church); relapsed heretics; sentence; punishments (in which section a rather unusual paragraph pleads for the readmission of the repentant heretic at any time).

Box 1, Volume 3

ZAMPONI, GASPARE DEODATO. Del Regno di Napoli. Memorie indrizzate agli Ecc.mi Signori della Reggenza.

Physical Description: - Folio manuscript, early 18th century, 68 ff. including half-title, title, introduction of 5 pp. and 125 pp. of text.

Scope and Content Note

The text is divided into ten chapters, summarized at the end of the introduction:
  • 1. on country roads
  • 2. on urban roads
  • 3. on public roadhouses
  • 4. on swamps
  • 5. on the growing of rice
  • 6. concerning the sea, navigation and foreign trade
  • 7. on the necessity of establishing home industries to compete with import from France and England or from the rest of Italy
  • 8. on the priority of certain industries over others, the most important being those making clothes, wax products (and their colorants), paper, and leather
  • 9. notes on other industries
  • 10. conclusions.
This clearly written manuscript, in a fairly large hand writing 22 lines to the page, is all the more interesting because of the obvious wide knowledge of its author regarding similar ventures in other countries, e.g. the innovations brought in those same years by Peter the Great in Russia. The author gives many examples of practical applications of his proposals abroad, and draws his conclusions from practice rather than theory.

The full text, written in red and black, of a 'pastoral comedy', with an epilogue spoken 'on the return of their Majesties from Warsow to Dreaden'. This play was introduced at Dresden'. This play was introduced at Dresden as part of the tuition of the Royal Children. Rehearsed during the absence of the parents, it was put on when the latter returned from Warsow. Court and city were greatly rejuvenated during the reign of Augustus I, who was also King of Poland. He left a large (and mainly illegitimate) family.
Despite heavy opposition and a good deal of scandal, the tutor apparently planned to extend this new scheme to include Latin and Italian: these plans were expressed in a letter to an interested nobleman, who had a copy made of both letter and play.
These he sent to the Confessor of the Queen of Naples, apparently With a view of propagating the new method of instruction. The French play, it was suggested, could be used at Naples - and in return Naples could provide a suitable Italian translation to be used at Dresden.
The letter expresses very interesting and certainly very advanced Ideas about teaching. The tutor's view 'c'est à l'instructeur Adroit, d'en inventer les expèdients propres au sujet, qu'il instruit, et de les dresser selon sa juste idèe' is a clearly 'modern' statement.
