Biographical Sketch

July 1916 Graduated from U.S. Naval Academy
1917-1918 Served in World War I aboard USS Benham, based at Queenstown, Ireland and Brest, France.
1919-1921 Served in China aboard USS Huron and USS Palos (upper Yangtze River Gunboat).
1921-1924 Served as Flag Lieutenant on Staff of U.S. High Commissioner to Turkey in Constantinople.
1925-1926 Served aboard USS Nevada during cruise to Australia.
1927-1929 Served on staff of Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Asiatic Fleet on China Station.
1929 Married Doanda Risley Putman, duaghter of American Consul in Amoy, in June.
1929-1931 Navy Department, Washington D.C.
1931-1934 Commanded USS Waters (destroyer) in U.S. Fleet.
1934-1936 Served as officer-in-charge U.S. Naval Shore Radio Stations, under Director of Naval Communications, Navy Department.
1936-1937 Served as First Lieutenant and Damage Control Officer aboard USS West Virginia.
1937-1938 Served as Flag Secretary to Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Fleet.
1938-1939 Completed Naval War College Course and served on Staff of U.S. Naval War college.
1940-1941 Served as Executive Officer aboard USS Astoria.
1941-1942 Established and served as First Commanding Officer, Naval Reserve Officers Training Corp, Holy Cross College.
1943-1944 Commissioned and commanded new light cruiser, USS Mobile in 27 operations in the Central Pacific Area, ending with the occupation of the Mariana Islands.
1944-1945 Served as the Senior U.S. Naval Liason Officer on the Staff of the Commander-in-Chief, British Pacific Fleet, and representative of Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet.
September 2, 1945 Witnessed surrender of Japanese on board USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.
1946-1948 Served as the American head of the Brazilian Naval War college in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
April 1, 1948 Retired from active duty and became Director of Personnel at State Mutual Life Insurance Co. of Worcester, Massachusetts.
June 12, 1981 Died. Buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
