    Acquisition Information

    SAFR-00001
    The collection was donated to San Francisco Maritime Museum by the granddaughters of Capt. Shaw in 1964 and then given to Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GOGA-00789) in 1986. It was then transferred and accessioned into San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park (SAFR-00001) in 1988.

    Historical or Biographical Note

    Captain Loring N. Shaw was born on August 25, 1827 in Quincy, Massachusetts. He graduated from a public school but went to sea in the summers from the age of 13. Shaw's father, John W., was also a sea captain.
    At the age of 21, Shaw became master of a California Coastal and Inland Waters vessel where he stayed for 8 years. In 1863 he left California and went to Boston to work in a general provisions business. In 1877, he went into the hotel business in Wisconson, and in 1887, he moved to Osceola, Nebraska. There he lived until his death on June 25, 1909.

    The Captain Loring N. Shaw photographs (P85-001, SAFR 17776) consists of 3 photographic portraits of Captain Shaw and his wife from 1849 to 1909.
    The collection includes a cased half plate daguerreotype of Capt. Shaw, circa 1851; a cabinet photograph of Capt. Shaw, sometime after 1887 in Osceola, Nebraska by C. E. Clark; and black-and-white photographic print of Capt. Shaw and his wife in Osceola, Nebraska, before 1909.
