Formerly Dean of the Law School and University Provost at the University of Chicago, Gerhard Casper became the 9th president
of Stanford University in 1992. His concerns while in office included restoration of the campus after the 1989 Loma Prieta
earthquake, a comprehensive study of undergraduate education, recruitment and retention of faculty, the integration of the
Stanford Alumni Association into the university, and the creation of a new Science and Engineering Quad. He left office in
2000 to resume his scholarly career in constitutional law.
