John E. (Jack) Gillespie (1921-2003) was professor of Music at the University of California, Santa Barbara for over 40 years. He authored "Five Centuries of Keyboard Music" (1964), "The Musical Experience" (1968), "Nineteenth-Century European Piano Music," "Nineteenth-Century American Piano Music," "Notable Twentieth-Century Pianists: A Bio-Critical Sourcebook," (1995) and numerous articles. He also made a series of recordings of harpsichord music. His wife, Anna Gillespie, collaborated with her husband on many of his projects.

Scope and Content of Collection

The collection is made up of research files on twentieth century pianists compiled by John and Anna Gillespie for their book "Notable twentieth-century pianists: a bio-critical sourcebook" (Greenwood press, 1995). The collection is organized into the following series: I. Artists, II. Educators, III. Instruments, IV. Photographs. Series I, which includes the great majority of the materials, is organized alphabetically by pianist. These files contain a mix of clippings of articles, books, concert reviews, programs, publicity materials and correspondence featuring artists (primarily pianists). Series I has three subseries containing research materials devoted to a pianist, multiple pianists, and prominent harpsichordists. Series II contains research material on piano educator Tobias Matthay. Series III includes articles and book excerpts on the development of musical instruments; specifically player pianos, harpsichords and organs. Series IV includes the photographs published in the Gillespies’ book “Notable Twentieth Century Pianists.”
