Drawings from trial of 6 San Quentin inmates (Fleeta Drumgo, David Johnson, Hugo Pinell, Johnny Larry Spain, Willie Tate & Luis Talamantez) charged with deaths of 3 guards & 2 inmates during 8/21/1971 prison uprising (when George Jackson killed).

Additional Note

The San Quentin Six trial, held at the Marin County Courthouse in San Rafael, CA, was at that time the longest trial in California history. One inmate (Spain) was convicted of murder and the other five were either acquitted or convicted of assault.

Charged with murder of two white officers, wounding another officer, and assault. Smith was acquitted of all charges of murder and convicted on single charge of assaulting the military police officer who arrested him.

Scope and Content Note

Drawings from 1972 trial of the surviving two Soledad Brothers, John Clutchette and Fleeta Drumgo. This was first California trial held in specially altered San Francisco courtroom with bulletproof shield and heavy security.

Additional Note

Soledad Brothers were acquitted of murder on March 27, 1972, which was also the opening day of the Angela Davis trial in San Jose. Drumgo was also one of the San Quentin Six and also a witness in the Angela Davis trial.

Wells was imprisoned in CA state prisons for total of 46 years, including 7 years on death row. Released 1974 and befriended by Ritz, who brought Wells to her gallery, arranged housing, went with him to appointments, and often sketched him.

Additional Note

Wells was cause celebre. Attorney Charles Garry had death penalty commuted to life in prison. Attys Garry & Leo Branton Jr had Wells released on parole in 1974 at age 63. Ritz arranged for him to live at San Francisco’s Delancey Street Foundation.

Drawings from the 1976-1977 trial of Wendy Yoshimura in Superior Court of Alameda County related to 1972 indictment on weapons charges. Arrested in San Francisco on 9/18/1975 with Symbionese Liberation Member [SLA] member Patty Hearst.

Additional Note

Yoshimura was found guilty on 1/20/1977 of unlawful possession of explosives, a machine gun, and materials with intent to make destructive devices. She was sentenced to 1-15 years and paroled in 1980.
