The lantern slides in this collection depict Livingstone's life in color illustrations, and are accompanied by a pamphlet that provides descriptions of the slides. The collection also includes a handwritten piece on David Livingstone by an unknown author.

This project was funded by the UCR Library and administered by Jessica Geiser, Collections Management Librarian.

Biographical Note

David Livingstone was a Scottish Congregationalist known for his missionary work and exploration of Africa in the 19th century. Born in 1813, Livingstone joined the London Missionary Society in the 1830s and began his work in Africa, traveling extensively throughout central and southern Africa as a medical missionary. He was a staunch abolitionist, and sought to end the East African Arab-Swahili slave trade though his influence as a national hero in late 19th century Britain.

Collection Scope and Contents

This collection contains 40 color illustrated glass lantern slides published by the London Missionary Society regarding David Livingstone, the noted explorer and medical missionary who traveled to Africa in the 19th century. The lantern slides in this collection highlight Livingstone's life and are accompanied by a pamphlet that provides descriptions of the slides. The artists of these slides is unknown. This collection also contains a handwritten piece from an unknown author on David Livingstone.
