Personal Series 1. 1933-1997

Series Scope and Content

This series comprises resumes and curriculum vitae, last will and testaments, interview transcripts, appointment books, education- and employment-related documents, financial records, real estate records, health records, correspondence, clippings and other material documenting Jim Kepner's personal life. The majority of this series includes material that is not directly related to his participation in the gay and lesbian movement. However, it should be noted that this series includes correspondence with the United States Selective Service and the Galveston County Draft Board regarding Kepner's homosexuality (1943-1945), as well as transcripts of interviews with Kepner. In addition, this series also includes documentation for Kepner's other jobs and business ventures, such as his co-ownership of a San Francisco bookstore, Books on Telegraph Hill (1950-1951).

Autobiographies Series 2. 1923-1997

Arrangement

Kepner's My First 75 Years of Gay Liberation and Loves of a Long-Time Activist are grouped at the beginning of the series. The remaining autobiographical manuscripts and newsletters are arranged alphabetically.

Series Scope and Contents

This series comprises manuscripts and notes for Kepner's autobiographies and his personal newsletters, !Mi Vida¡ and Song and Dance. The bulk of this series consists of manuscripts for My First 75 Years of Gay Liberation, an almost daily account of Kepner's life and his involvement in the gay and lesbian rights movement. Note that alternate titles for the My First 75 Years of Gay Liberation manuscript have been provided to indicate the version of the draft and the years in Kepner's life that are described. Also included in this series is Kepner's manuscripts for "Vignettes"--later renamed Loves of a Long-Time Activist--a collection of poems describing Kepner's relationships with former lovers.

Series Scope and Contents

This series comprises manuscripts, clippings, notes, correspondence and resource material related to Kepner's books, articles, and essays about gay and lesbian history. It is divided into four subseries: (3.1) Published and unpublished books, (3.2) Biographies, (3.3) Published and submitted articles, and (3.4) General manuscripts. Note that Kepner's educational course material on gay and lesbian studies can be found in Series 9: Gay and lesbian studies and activism.
 

Published and unpublished books Subseries 3.1. 1970-1997

Subseries Scope and Contents

This subseries comprises manuscripts and drafts, notes, correspondence, and publicity material for Jim Kepner's three books: Becoming a People; Rough News, Daring Views; and Seeking the Spark. Becoming a People is a self-published chronology of 4,000 years of gay and lesbian history. Rough News, Daring Views is a book about the history of gay and lesbian journalism in the United States during the 1950s, and it was published by Haworth Press, Inc., in 1998. Seeking the Spark is Kepner's unpublished book manuscript regarding philosophical and theological theories about homosexuality.

He was a columnist and/or regular contributor to the Advocate, In Touch, Newswest, ONE Magazine, ONE Institute Quarterly of Homophile Studies, Entertainment West and Frontiers. Kepner's published articles include book reviews as well as monthly articles on gay and lesbian history. It is important to note that many of these articles were written under one of Kepner's pseudonyms, such as Dal McIntire, Frank Golovitz, Lyn Pedersen, J.K. Short, and others.
