Historical Note
The WORDEN (Torpedo Boat Destroyer No. 16) was launched on August 15, 1901 at Sparrows Point, MD. In November 1907, she was placed in reserve at the Norfolk Navy Yard, and later in Charleston, S.C. During the First World War, she was reactivated, and was placed out of commission in Philadelphia in 1919. She was converted to mercantile service in 1920.
The WORDEN (Torpedo Boat Destroyer No. 16) was launched on August 15, 1901 at Sparrows Point, MD. In November 1907, she was placed in reserve at the Norfolk Navy Yard, and later in Charleston, S.C. The collection was donated to the San Francisco Maritime Museum by Mercedes Pearce in November 1960. The materials were accessioned
into the National Park Service when the museum was made a unit of Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GOGA-735) and then
were transferred to San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park after the establishment of the new park in 1989 (SAFR-1).
