    Scope and Content of Collection

    Phi Beta Kappa was founded in 1776, making it the nation's oldest honorary society. The Lambda of California chapter of UCSB was founded in 1968 and has since initiated over 2,000 members. The collection contains records of the chapter's formation, organization, and the selection and initiation process, including correspondence, meeting minutes, handbooks, reports, and other related documents. Some documents have been removed or redacted to protect student privacy.

    Arrangement

    Files are arranged generally as received, and are organized into the following series:
    Series I: Formation & Qualification of Chapter contains reports to the qualification committee, early meeting minutes and membership lists, and other related materials.
    Series II: Chronological Files contains materials primarily on the selection, notification, and initiation process for new members of Phi Beta Kappa.
    Series III: Subject Files contains correspondence, financial records, handbooks, member lists, lecture files, and other miscellaneous files.
