Biography
Charles B. Lawler was born in Los Angeles, CA on April 22, 1902, to Oscar and Hilda B. Lawler. He graduated from UC Berkeley
(1924) and then spent six months at Harvard Law School. Abandoning a law career, he returned to his native city and got closer
to art via ceramics while employed at the Gladding-McBean tile plant. On a trip to Paris in 1928 he decided to become a sculptor.
About 1930 he returned to Paris to study under Charles Malfray. He then studied at the CSFA under Stackpole and in Los Angeles
with Archipenko. During WWII he made models for Hughes Aircraft and Lockheed. Lawler taught at Pomona College at Claremont
from 1949-1957. His last twenty years were spent in a 90-acre hilltop home in Pescadero, CA. He died there on September 12,
1977.
Working in clay, wood, and stone, Lawler's early works were representational but later evolved into abstractions.
