Therefore, ceaseless research of jurisprudence, beginning with the study of the fundamentals and Arabic, is of paramount importance. [Minhaj al-nijat] / [The right paths to salvation] Manuscript no. 12 no date

General Physical Description note: 418 leaves : paper ; 314 × 185 mm.

Scope and Contents note

Persian translation of Fay? al-Kashi's "Minhaj al-nijat", a comprehensive book of Shiite devotionals. The manuscript contains several hundred prayers in Arabic, in addition to narrative prologues in Persian that describe the origins of some prayers. Several pages from the beginning, the end, and the middle are missing. The first full prayer, starting at the bottom of on 1a, is the "prayer of the small coat of mail (jawshan-I ?aghir)".
Although the title page is no longer attached, a number of clues allow for making an inference on the identity of the book. First, on a small piece of paper measuring 6 × 3 × 7 cm. (torn from a dedication page, judging by the decorative gilding between the lines, and the occurrence of the words "royal crown and throne"), there are two key words. These are on the backside of the gilded page and read "al-nijat 'Abbasi". Since this section is in Persian, the Arabic definite article added to the word "nijat" suggests a title of a book--most likely "Minhaj al-nijat", the Arabic book written by Mu?ammad ibn Murta?á Fay? al-Kashi (1598 or 9-1680 or 81) while sojourning in the ?afawid capital Isfahan during the reign of Shah 'Abbas II (the king whose name is attached to the title).
The second clue is provided in the margin of 95a where a hand, while clarifying a certain phrase in one of the prayers, refers to the discrepancy between the "original manuscript" and "the manuscript of Muhaj al-Da' awat" . The original is most likely the Arabic original of al-Kashi, and the second text, "Muhaj al-da' awat wa-manhaj al-' ibadat", is the book of Shiite prayers composed by the 13th century scholar 'Ali ibn Musá Ibn ?awus (1193-1266).
  • Author: [Fay? al-Kashi, Mu?ammad ibn Murta?á, 1598 or 9-1680 or 81]
  • Language: Text in Persian and Arabic
  • Layout: 17 lines of text per page.
  • Script: Naskh; Arabic texts vocalized.
  • Binding: Unbound text block.
  • Additional descriptive data: Text in black ink with headings in red or gold, enclosed in a painted border. Occasional staining and tears.
  • Contents:
