Historical Note
The Bureau of Jewish Education of San Diego, formerly the Jewish Education Commission, was established in 1949, after preliminary
discussions in late 1948, and undertook responsibility for the welfare of Jewish education on a community-wide basis. With
four sponsoring groups, Beth Israel, Beth Jacob, Tifereth Israel, and the United Jewish Fund, and the participation of SDSU
faculty such as Abraham Nasatir, the Bureau undertook to establish monthly forums and semester-long courses for junior and
senior high school students, as well as for all community members on various topics, including Jewish music, culture, customs,
marriage and family life, history, literature, and languages including Hebrew and Yiddish. In its first year, the Bureau served
approximately 40 students. The Bureau was affiliated with the Council of Jewish Federations & Welfare Funds, Inc., the Committee
on Federation Planning for Jewish Education, the American Association for Jewish Education, and the Institute of Jewish Studies,
and worked continually to grow and expand its services.
