M. M. Afanasiev was born in Russia on 21 November 1900. In 1920 he left Russia and in 1927 he was awarded the Degree of Agricultural Engineer from the Higher School of Agriculture (Brno, Czechoslovakia). In 1930 he arrived in the United States and in June 1937 he received his Ph.D. (plant pathology, botany and organic chemistry) from the University of Nebraska.
