Acquisition Information

The Francis J. Heney papers were purchased by The Bancroft Library from N. A. Kovach in 1939 and 1940. Additions of Heney campaign material came from the Robbins collection, Boalt Hall in 2006 and 2007.

Biographical Information

Francis Joseph Heney was a lawyer most famous for his involvement in the Dr. John Christopher Handy divorce case in 1891, the Oregon Land Fraud trials in 1905, and the San Francisco graft prosecution from 1906 to 1908. In 1914 Heney ran for the U.S. Senate as a Progressive, but lost to Democrat James D. Phelan.
