Scope and Content of Collection
The collection contains three letters relating to Benjamin F. [B. F.] Wade (1800-1878), abolitionist and Whig/Republican Senator
from Ohio, 1851-1869. Wade was co-author of the Wade-Davis bill on reconstruction, which was pocket vetoed by President Lincoln,
and the subsequent Wade-Davis Manifesto. He often was at odds with Lincoln, who he held responsible for the slow progress
of the Union in the Civil War. Wade served as President pro tempore of the Senate during the Thirty-ninth and Fortieth Congresses
(1865-1869) and was an unsuccessful Republican candidate for the vice presidential nomination in 1868. After he also lost
a bid for re-election to the Senate in 1868, he returned to practicing law and became the attorney for the Northern Pacific
Railroad.
The letters in the collection are as follows:
Dec. 14, 1861 - One letter (ALS) from C. R. Wade [wife of B. F.] to R. F. Paine, a friend of B. F., concerning re-election
of B. F. and opposition to him.
Nov. 9, 1863 - One letter (ALS) from B. F. to David [Tod?], declining an invitation to attend the dedication of Gettysburg
cemetery, citing the pressing need to prepare for the upcoming session of Congress.
Sept. 16, 1867 - One letter (ALS) from M. Welker and B. F. Wade to Dr. J. Williams, re upcoming Ohio elections in Ashland
and Wayne counties, asking for assistance in the form of additional speakers.
