    Administrative History

California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) was once the southern, agrarian campus of the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo). Founded in 1938, the campus was originally located in San Dimas at the former Voorhis School for Boys. In 1949, ACR 100 (Resolution Chapter 190, Statutes of 1949) turned the Kellogg family ranch at Pomona over to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. In 1956, the agrarian campus moved from San Dimas to Pomona and the name changed to the California State Polytechnic College, Kellogg-Voorhis. Ten years later, the college became independent of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo by becoming the sixteenth California State College campus. The college transitioned into a full university in 1972. The two presidents during this period were Dr. Robert C. Kramer (1966-1977) and Dr. Hugh O. La Bounty (1977-1991).

    Scope and Content

The record group consists of 2 cubic feet of textual records from the California State Polytechnic College, Kellogg-Voorhis and California State Polytechnic University, Pomona covering the years 1968 to 1983. This collection is organized into one series, Subject Files. The collection largely consists of memorandums, correspondence, and reports reflecting the university's need to accommodate the expanding student population while establishing the campus as a nationally recognized institution. The majority of the records where produced between 1977 to 1981.
The collection will interest researchers concerned with Cal Poly Pomona's growth after becoming an independent campus. Most of the collection was from bureaucracies within the campus and focus on technical issues ranging from enrollment and class offerings to maintaining high standards during budget downfalls and increasing instructional funding. Much of the collection concerns communication between the campus President and the State University Chancellor's Office regarding financial and academic issues such as new degree programs, the campus budget, and aligning Cal Poly Pomona with the rest of the State University campuses. Additional communication involved the campus President's discussions with various campus bureaucracies over the university's evolving mission and the idiosyncratic student body. Academic offerings grew concurrently with the campus while expanding beyond trade and agricultural subjects. The records of the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona offers researchers an example of California's higher education expansion including insight into how administrators, faculty, and students responded to a dynamic environment found in such a tra nsitory period.
