Series Scope and Content Summary

This series contains account balance worksheets, bank statements, company valuations, freight bills, bills of lading, invoices and receipts, payroll ledgers, time books, vouchers, and waybills. Records include account balance worksheets for Angels Camp Branch, Don Pedro Branch, Melones Dam Branch, and Sonora, and station monthly reports for Angels Camp, Cooperstown, Hetch Hetchy, and Sonora.

Much of this series consists of vouchers. General vouchers cover the years 1900-1971. In addition to the general vouchers, there are audit vouchers, entry vouchers, and payroll vouchers. Audit vouchers cover the years 1900-1943 (excluding the years 1915, 1920-1923, 1926-1936); entry vouchers cover the years 1901-1927 (excluding 1904-1910); and payroll vouchers cover the years 1907-1939 (excluding 1909-1910, 1914, 1916, 1931-1936). For most years, voucher series are not complete. Some of these vouchers are fire-damaged.

To preserve the information contained in the vouchers and to make it available to researchers, the California State Railroad Museum Library will be making preservation photocopies of the fire damaged vouchers on an on-going basis. Researchers should contact the California State Railroad Museum Library staff for a complete list of available vouchers.

Series Scope and Content Summary

This series contains transcriptions of incoming and outgoing correspondence between individuals and companies regarding Sierra Railroad operations. Letters are from former Sierra Railroad presidents and vice presidents including William C. Cheney, Robert H. Downes, Ferol R. Egan and Sidney D. Freshman. Also included in this series is other staff correspondence including H. A. Butchart, Reinehart Hall, C.N. Hamblin, William H. Newell, T. L. Sory, J.E. Taylor, and William A. Wenneson.

The letter books in this series contain outgoing administrative correspondence from various Sierra staff members.

Series Scope and Content Summary

In 2002, Richard Rosenquist made a large donation of Sierra Railway / Sierra Railroad material to the California State Railroad Museum. Since many of the early Sierra Railway records were destroyed in a fire at the Jamestown depot in 1978, Mr. Rosenquist's donation represents a substantial addition to the amount of documentation available about the railroad.

Mr. Rosenquist's donation included, among other documents, account ledgers, payroll books, vouchers, several hundred maps and drawings, (profiles, station maps and State Board of Equalization maps), letter books and photocopies of transcriptions of correspondence. Except for the maps and drawings which were incorporated into the Library's general collection, other primary source material was incorporated into this collection.

This series also contains research materials for Richard Rosenquist's unpublished book on the Sierra Railroad Company entitled, Railroad Transplant. Documents include research notes, typewritten transcriptions of newspaper articles, legal documents, memos and letters, digital copies of United States Geographical Survey maps, right of way, and track profile maps. There is also a draft and final transcript of Railroad Transplant.
