relating to his experiments and research are contained in boxes 1 through 12. Papers relating to his professional career are
contained in boxes 12 and 13. Boxes 13 through 19 contain papers and talks with related correspondence. Laboratory notebooks
are in boxes 20 and 21.
Biographical/Historical Sketch
Professor emeritus of physics at Stanford University. Fairbank earned his Ph.D. from Yale in 1948; he taught at Amherst College
and Duke University before joining the Stanford faculty in 1959. His research interests included superconductivity, gravity
waves, individual quarks and monopoles.
Description of the Collection
Correspondence, notes, talks, papers, graphs and charts, articles, reports, research proposals, laboratory notebooks, and
photographs largely related to his research projects, including free fall experiment, gravity gradiometer, lambda point experiment,
gravitational radiation, HE³ nuclear gyro, magnetic susceptometer, and magnetocardiography.
These papers, dating from 1961 to 1989, document Prof. Fairbank’s research interests and academic affairs. Materials include
correspondence, notes, talks, articles, graphs (some as transparencies used to illustrate talks), papers, reports, proposals,
lab notebooks, and photographs.
