    Scope and Content of Collection

The Leland Lewis Aerial Photographs of Baja California Collection contains images of points, ports, capes, bays, and islands along the Pacific and Gulf of California coasts of the Baja California peninsula. Most of the images are eight by ten inch black-and-white photoprints taken from a light plane off the coast. While most of the photographs were taken by Lewis, some images were collected from commercial and governmental sources. The collection includes images of the towns of Ensenada, La Paz, Loreto, Mulege, Santa Rosalia, and San Felipe. The photographs, most of which date between 1965 and 1971, are arranged alphabetically by location.

    Biography

Leland Lewis was a navigator who worked aboard west coast tuna clippers and sailed as the skipper of his own schooner. In 1965, he published the first volume of his Sea Guide, which covered the Southern California coast from Point Arguello to Punta Banda, Mexico. The second volume, covering both the Pacific and Gulf of California coasts of Baja California, appeared in 1971. Most of the photographs were taken in the company of Arnold Senterfitt, a pilot and author of Airports of Baja California.
