    Abstract: The collection is composed of chapbooks printed by the famous Mexican publisher and printer Antonio Vanegas Arroyo from 1880-1925. Chapbooks in the collection document elements of popular culture in Mexico around the turn of the century, and consist of booklets on a variety of subjects, including literature, poems, folk songs, plays, religious tracts, and healthcare advice.

    Processing of the Collection of Antonio Vanegas Arroyo chapbooks was completed by undergraduate students from the University of California, Riverside as part of the Special Collections & University Archives Backlog Processing Project started in 2015. This project was funded by the UCR Library and administered by Jessica Geiser, Collections Management Librarian.

    Historical Note

    Antonio Vanegas Arroyo was a famous printer and publisher around the turn of the century in Mexico, whose press was active from 1880 until the 1940s. Arroyo's press was known for producing a number of popular publications created by various artists and edited by Arroyo, including chapbooks, broadsides, street gazettes, comics, and corridos.

    Collection Scope and Contents

    The collection is composed of chapbooks printed by the famous Mexican publisher and printer Antonio Vanegas Arroyo from 1880-1925. Chapbooks in the collection consist of small, printed paper booklets, usually illustrated with a woodcut drawing on the cover, and occassionally containing illustrations throughout the book as well.
    Chapbooks produced by Arroyo document a variety of subjects related to popular Mexican culture, including literature, poems, folk songs, plays, religious tracts, and healthcare advice.
