Brightfield was born on October 31, 1897 in Belleville, Illinois; AB, 1919, AM, 1921, Ph.D, 1926, Harvard University; instructor
in English, Indiana University, 1922-24; assistant professor, 1926-35, associate professor, 1935-44, and professor of English,
UC Berkeley; published works include
Theodore Hook and his novels (1928),
The issue in literary criticism (1932),
John Wilson Croker (1940), and
Victorian England in its novels, 1840-1870 (1968); he died in 1964.
Scope and Content
Collection consists of research notes, drafts, and card indexes related to Professor Brightfield's studies of Victorian England,
and class notes, syllabi, and examinations for courses taught by Brightfield while professor of English at UC Berkeley. Includes
research material for his books, Victorian England and its novels, 1840-1870, and John Wilson Croker. Also contains two reels
of microfilm relating to Victorian novels.
