Scope and Content of Collection
The album contains 50 photographic prints. They are taken from a
colonial perspective. They capture social life and customs, public gatherings,
and oratory or Kabary traditions. There are portraits of women belonging to
different tribes, showing their hairstyles and different types of dress.
Numerous photographs also capture the natural beauty of the island i.e.
waterfalls, lakes, clearings within forests and so on.
The album also includes several images of the French colonial or
military presence. Two photographs capture French public celebrations of
Bastille Day (July 14th). There are also photographs of a harbor and large
ships which attest to the French military presence in Madagascar.
Handwritten captions appear on the album page below each photograph
and are transcribed as they appear. Cataloger’s notes are in brackets.

paper (p.o.p.) prints.
