Scope and Content of Collection
The album contains 50 photographic prints. They are taken from a colonial perspective. They capture social life and customs,
public gatherings, and oratory or Kabary traditions.There are portraits of women belonging to different tribes, showing their
hairstyles and different types of dress. Numerous photographs also capture the natural beauty of the island i.e. waterfalls,
lakes, clearings within forests and so on.
The album also includes several images of the French colonial or military presence. Two photographs capture French public
celebrations of Bastille Day (July 14th). There are also photographs of a harbor and large ships which attest to the French
military presence in Madagascar.
Handwritten captions appear on the album page below each photograph and are transcribed as they appear. Cataloger's notes
are in brackets.
Album cover is red cloth. Photographs are gelatin silver printing-out paper (p.o.p.) prints.
