Scope and Content of Collection
The two albums contain 175 black and white photos related to the career of Father Linus Lombard C.P., a member of the Passionists
(a Roman Catholic religious order) who served as a missionary in China for several decades (ca. 1931-1954), in Hunan (湖南)
and Hubei (湖北) provinces. The photographs (many with handwritten captions) are mostly scenes related to the mission's
buildings and staff. There are also many shots of various locales and scenes of everyday life among the populace in the two
provinces, primarily in Hankow (Hankou) and other areas along the Yangzi (Yangtze ) River. Among these are images of the
city of Wuhu, Japanese gunboats in Hankow, the Hankow Bund (the bund usually refers to the waterfront area adjacent to
a wharf or quay), "River Folks" and their boats, a roadside barber and others. A number of photographs relate to the flood
of the Yangzi in 1931 which claimed the lives of 145,00 inhabitants of the area.
Father Linus Lombard was born Richard Hayden Lombard on January 3, 1902 in Everett, Massachusetts. He professed his vows
as a member of the Passionist Order in 1923 and spent much of his career in China (where he was known as Sen Fu), serving
as the vicar general in Hunan. He returned to the United States in 1954 thereafter serving in Union City, New Jersey., West
Springfield, Massachusetts, and West Hartford, Connecticut. He died in 1979.
Biographical information on Father Linus Lombard was obtained via the online Passionist Historical Archives (http://cpprovince.org/archives/index.html)
where further details on Passionist missionary activities in China may also be found.
