DIGITAL FILES
Scope and Content of Series
Series 21) DIGITAL FILES: Content originally saved by Mac Low to his library of nearly 300 floppy disks and zip drives. Many
of the files were originally created or saved in versions of Microsoft Word from the early to mid-1990s, and are therefore
not readily viewable on modern computers with updated software. PDF renderings of all the documents have been created for
keyword searching and requesting on the Library's Digital Collections website (the original files in their native formats
have also been preserved). Original creation dates of the documents were captured and appear in the descriptions of the corresponding
PDF versions. The handwritten label, or inscription, on each disk was also included in the description for each file. Mac
Low tended to save and re-save files, and de-duplicating across the collection was performed using automated tools. Still,
some files may be similar or redundant. Most of the files are poems or letters (correspondence has been consolidated into
single objects by year). Additional material includes email, applications and executable programs Mac Low used as tools in
his poetry writing (see Diastex/Diastext, Lucas, Prose, and Travesty), and other miscellaneous digital documents.
Restrictions
Due to copyright restrictions, digital files may only be viewed through the Library's Virtual Reading Room service. Search
for and request individual documents on the Digital Collections website (linked at the top of this finding aid with the "view
now" button).
Applications from floppy disks
1984-1994
General
Executable files and related documentation for the Programs Diastext (Diastex), Prose, Travesty and Lucas.
AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS
Scope and Content of Series
Series 22) AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS: An extensive collection of sound recordings of Mac Low's poetry performances, on reel to
reel and audiocassettes, plus a small number of films and video. The materials are arranged according to Jackson Mac Low's
personal filing system, which assigned unique numbers to most of the recordings and was loosely chronological. Many of the
recordings feature recitation of the same poem, but each performance is unique. Performances were frequently collaborative,
and the boxes for the reels and cassettes often include notes of the names of other performers and musicians.
Sound recordings have been reformatted, and listening copies are available. Due to copyright restrictions, access to recordings
is limited to the reading room or the Library's virtual reading room service. Please request recordings through the finding
aid, or the Digital Collections website.
Arranged in three subseries: A) Reel-to-Reel, B) Video and Film, and C) Audiocassettes.
A) Reel-to-Reel: Reels are arranged according to Mac Low's index system, with unique "RJ" and "RM" numbers assigned to most
of the recordings, with some untitled reels at the end. Most are 7.5", though there are other sizes in the collection. Prominent
titles include A Vocabulary for Sharon Belle Mattlin, Age of Anxiety, Asymmetries 1-190, Milarepa Gatha, The 5th Biblical
Poem, and The Text on the Opposite Page.
B) Video and Film: Titles include
Jacajurismetics, Tree Movie, and the Jackson Mac Low Retrospective Concert. Arranged chronologically.
C) Audiocassettes: Cassettes are arranged according to Mac Low's index system, with unique "CJ" and "CM" numbers assigned
to most of the recordings, followed by unnumbered cassettes arranged chronologically. Includes several hundred recordings
of poetry readings, performances, and festivals in which Mac Low was a participant, though some recordings may be of other
poets or musicians.
