Abstract:
The Haskett Collection contains family papers, correspondence, photographs, postcards, scrapbooks, slides, blueprints, and
ephemera. Varying widely in their subjects and unified by their passing to Jon Haskett. These documents pertain to the past
three generations of the Haskett and Baker families. The families both arrived in California in the late 19th century and
were united by the marriage of Clara Beymer Baker to William Blair Haskett, both of Pasadena, California. The materials in
the collection date from 1861 to 1928, with the bulk of the collection between 1880 and 1919.
Of noted interest is the variety of nineteenth and early twentieth century photography found in the collection, including
southwestern U.S. views, portraits of American Indians, European stereoscopic views, and Matthew Brady’s Civil War Generals
carte de visite set.

Biographical Note
The Haskett Family Collection contains personal letters, photographs, ephemera and other memorabilia documenting three generations
of the Haskett/Baker Family of Pasadena, California. Both families arrived in Southern California in the mid-nineteenth century.
The Haskett family moved from Arkansas; the Blair family came from Wisconsin.. The collection covers the period from 1860
to 1920. The bulk of the collection covers the period from 1880-1920. offers researchers a glimpse into the lives of different
generations of one family.
Scope and Contents of the Collection
The Haskett collection contains family papers, correspondence, photographs, postcards, scrapbooks, slides, blueprints, and
ephemera, from 1861 to 1928. The bulk is between 1880 and 1919. Notable holdings include photographs in reproduction by Matthew
Brady, George Fiske, and Abel Briquet, letters between William Blair Haskett and his wife Clara while he was stationed at
Army bases in California and Arizona in 1918-1919, the diary of John Myers recording his travels between St. Louis and California
by train in 1902, and WWI ephemera. The bulk of the collection covers the period from 1880-1920. offers researchers a glimpse
into the lives of different generations of one family.

Scope and Content Note
French master of photography at the Saint Cyr Military Academy. In 1876 he was commissioned to photograph the construction
of the railway line between Veracruz and Mexico City. Most of his work after that took place in Mexico with his studies on
the port of Veracruz in 1880 for the French steamship company La Compagnie Maritime Transatlantique. He also prepared a series
of commemorative albums called Vistas Mexicanas between 1880 to 1895.

Scope and Content Note
Anderson published views of Richmond, Virginia and vicinity, and muntain scenery of Virginia and West Virginia. George Barker
lived from 1844 to 1894; in 1862 he photographed Niagara Falls, New York and in 1886, Barker began photographing in Georgia,
Virginia, and Saint Augustine, Florida, for the tourist trade.
Bierstadt and his brothers Albert and Charles opened a studio in New Bedford which operated from 1859-1879, making mostly
stereoscopic views. Charles Bierstadt photographed Niagara Falls, New York. Abel Briquet is a French photographer who was
active in France in the 1850s and in Mexico from the 1876 to 1911. He was commissioned by a Mexican railway company to photograph
the line between Veracruz and Mexico City in 1876, and then by a French steamship company to photograph the port of Veracruz
in 1880. It appears that he stopped production sometime around the beginning of the Revolution in 1911. W. H. Chase, also,
photographed Niagra falls. Caswell and Davy, W. H. Illingsworth, B. F. Upton, Whitney and Zimmerman photographs scenery in
Minnesota. during the 19th century. J. F. Jarvis photographed views of Washington, D. C.. J. J. Cooke and Carleton Watkins
photographed views of California and the Pacific. George Pierron and J. N. Wilson photographed the American South. In 1861,
photographer, Mathew Brady, requested permission from the United States government to document the Civil War. From 1861 to
1865, he organized teams of photographers attached to all parts of the United States Army who documented battles, officers
and equipment. Brady and his team were able to cover all the battles and events of the war, which include portraits of Generals
Grant and Lee, as well as unflinching images of dead soldiers.
