Arrangement

Bill files are arranged chronologically by legislative session and numerically by bill number.

Scope and Content Note

These bill files created by the Assembly Committee on Transportation may include all or some of the following items: bill analyses, amendments and resolutions, author's statements, testimony, press releases, newspaper clippings, background information, correspondence, roll calls, records of votes, and committee statements. Because of the size and complexity of transportation in California, the range of topics included in bills assigned to the Assembly Transportation Committee varies greatly. Some topics of particular interest and reoccurrence in recent years include cell phone regulation, Department of Motor Vehicles records confidentiality, illegal alien drivers licenses, and increased attention to bicyclists and pedestrians.

Microfilm copies of bill files are available for the years 1969-1976 where indicated with MF before the LP number. Researchers should use the microfilm copies.

Series 2 Hearing Files 1956-1961 1963-1987

Arrangement

Hearing files are arranged chronologically by hearing date.

Scope and Content Note

Hearing files include informational hearings, joint informational hearings, interim hearings and round tables. These files may contain agendas, testimony, transcripts, reports, and background material. When complete, hearing files can provide an in-depth analysis of issues of concern to the committee and California's transportation related issues. Of particular interest are the creation and management of transportation districts and rapid transit programs. Other subjects covered consistently over the history of the committee include air and noise pollution, traffic congestion, auto safety, truck regulation, fuels, and transportation financing.

All audiocassettes and videotapes have been stored separately for preservation purposes. Separation sheets are included in the files to alert researchers to the existence of tapes.

Physical Description: 209 file folders, 1 audiotape, and 56 videotapes.

Arrangement

Subject files are arranged alphabetically by subject heading.

Scope and Content Note

Subject files created by the Assembly Committee on Transportation may include administrative papers, correspondence, background materials, notes, reports, newspaper clippings, and subcommittee information. A significant portion of the subject files for the Assembly Transportation Committee records consist of administrative and legislative papers pertaining to operations, rules, and records of measure for various state and local agencies, committees, commissions, departments and districts. These papers provide insight into the inner workings of the organizations that shape California's transportation. Other subject files include Bay Area Rapid Transit and other high-speed rail systems, air pollution and smog, transportation fuels, and vehicle noise abatement.

Independent magnetic media in the form of one audiotape and 56 videotapes are included in the subject files. The tapes include information on various subjects including transportation safety, clean air, reformulated gasoline, toxic chemical transportation and spills, truck lengths, and seatbelts. These independent audio and videotapes are located separately in cold storage.

Reports are arranged chronologically by publication date.

Scope and Content Note

Reports include publications by government agencies and organizations as well as independent consultants and researchers of analyses, proposals, studies, and statistical records on a variety of transportation-related subjects. Many of the published reports in this collection by government agencies and organizations were the result of legislative mandate while those published by independent consultants and researchers were done to provide the committee guidance and information on transportation topics, projects, and bills.
