He was also the editor of the Theatre, and adapted French plays for the London stage. The collection consists of letters from various persons to Clement Scott, mostly connected with the theater.

Biography

Clement William Scott was born in 1841 in London, England; attended Marlborough College, and became a clerk at the War office in 1860; became author and drama critic, contributing pieces to the Daily telegraph, Sunday times, Weekly dispatch, London Figaro, The observer, and others; after retiring from the civil service in 1879, he joined the staff of the Daily telegraph as drama critic, and also became editor of the Theatre in 1880; adapted French plays for the London stage; published works include Lays of a Londoner (1882), Lays and lyrics (1888), The drama of yesterday and to-day (1899), and Ellen Terry (c. 1900); he died in 1904.

Scope and Content

Collection consists of letters from various persons to Clement Scott, mostly connected with the theater. Correspondents include Constance Beerbohm, Marie Corelli, and Bram Stoker. Also contains one letter from Scott to Sir Squire Bancroft.
