Biographical/Historical Sketch

California reporter and attorney. Growing up in California, Shay served in a wide variety of positions throughout his life, including special reporter for Sacramento and Virginia City newspapers, accountant and telegrapher for the Sutro Tunnel Company, and, after completing his law degree at Hastings Law College, attorney for the Southern Pacific Company and personal counsel for railroad president Leland Stanford.
