    Scope and Content of Collection

The collection contains correspondence, articles, lectures, conference, exhibition, and organization files, project files (announcements, articles, binding, budget, correspondence, design, manuscripts, models, photographs, printing, reviews, and related materials) of Carolee Campbell, UCSB alumna, book artist, and founder of Ninja Press (named after her black cat). Among her other credits, Carolee also is an Emmy award winning actress, who appeared on The Doctors in the late 1960s and early 1970s, and an accomplished photographer.
Ninja Press, devoted largely to poetry, published its first work in 1984. In 1988 Carolee, with the Friends of the UCSB Library, published Henry David Thoreau's essay Walking in a limited edition of 150 copies. At the time, the Thoreau Edition, directed by Elizabeth Hall Witherell and producing accurate texts of Thoreau's complete works, was [and still is] located in the library at UCSB.
At present there are three major segments in the collection: the initial collection acquired in 1997, plus additional segments acquired in 2000 and 2005. Further additions to the collection are anticipated.
Detailed descriptions of contents, prepared by Carolee Campbell, are included in each box.
Copies of printed Ninja Press items have been cataloged separately and can be searched in Pegasus, the UCSB libraries online catalog.
Future additions to the collection are anticipated.
