    Collection Scope and Content Summary

This artificial collection comprises fliers, brochures, and newsletters produced by various student and off-campus groups, and distributed near UC Irvine's Gateway Plaza--the entry to the center of campus, located between the Main Library and Gateway Commons. Library staff collected the materials between 1966 and 1995. Most of the organizations whose literature is featured in this collection were not UCI-based groups. Rather, the bulk of the literature was produced by larger local and national organizations. Some of the more prolific contributing groups include: United Farm Workers, Vietnam Veterans Against the War, Farmworkers Support Committee of Orange County, Californians for McGovern, and Campuses United Against Apartheid.
Topics covered include: the Vietnam War moratorium and protests; music performances and poetry readings; religious and spiritual groups' literature; protests at UC Berkeley; women's liberation; student elections; the American presidential election of 1972; the impeachment of President Richard Nixon; farm workers' protests; company boycotts; race relations; police violence; apartheid in South Africa; state politics; establishment of ethnic studies programs at the university; and issues with faculty and the Regents. Also included in this collection are copies of newspaper articles about the protest events, statements from campus administration on polices relating to strike and protest activities, and one photograph from the June 1970 Cambodia Crisis meeting. There are also email messages received by library staff in the 1990s which cover strike and protest information.
Two other collections have been incorporated here due to the similarities in their content and method of acquisition. The materials from May and June of 1970 were collected by library staff during protests against the U.S. presence in Cambodia and were originally kept in a collection called "UCI Strike." Materials from the mid 1970s to 1995 were originally housed in the topical vertical file folder called "Student Protest" and have been included in this collection as well.
This collection is arranged chronologically by the date or month when the materials were distributed or collected.
