Abstract: George Pullen Jackson (1874-1953) taught German at various institutions beginning in 1905, was a professor of German (1918-43) and emeritus at Vanderbilt University, President of the University Philharmonic Society in Grand Forks, North Dakota (1913-18), the founder of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra (1920), and president of the Southeastern Folklore Society (1946). He also wrote articles for music and folklore journals. His published books include The rhythmic form of the German folk songs (1916-17), Spiritual folk-songs of early America (1937), and White and Negro spirituals (1943). The collection consists of photostatic copies of four separate indexes to Jackson's collection of Southern hymnody.

Biography

Jackson was born on August 20, 1874 in Monson, Maine; student, Royal Conservatory of Music, Dresden, 1897-98, Vanderbilt University, 1900-01; Ph.B (1904) and Ph.D (1911), University of Chicago; post-graduate work at University of Chicago, University of Munich, and University of Bonn; taught German at various institutions beginning in 1905; became associate professor of German (1918-26), professor (1926-43), and emeritus at Vanderbilt University; President, University Philharmonic Society, Grand Forks, North Dakota, 1913-18; founded Nashville Symphony Orchestra, 1920; president, Southeastern Folklore Society, 1946; member, American Musicological Society; wrote articles for Modern language notes, Journal of American folklore, and Musical quarterly; his published books include The rhythmic form of the German folk songs (1916-17), Spiritual folk-songs of early America (1937), and White and Negro spirituals (1943); died on January 19, 1953.

Collection consists of photostatic copies of four separate indexes to Jackson's collection of Southern hymnody (books from the collection have been cataloged individually).
