The Lillian Estelle Fisher Research Materials relating to Mexico were separated from her papers,
which were given to The Bancroft Library by Dr. Fisher in September 1969, with additions made in
June and October of 1984.
Biography
Lillian Estelle Fisher was born May 1, 1891 in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. She attended Susquehanna
University, and after graduation taught at a Methodist Normal School for Girls in Puebla, Mexico. Fisher
received degrees from the University of Southern California and the University of California, Berkeley,
and taught at the Oklahoma College for Women for 15 years. An academic historian who specialized in
Latin America, Dr. Fisher wrote approximately a dozen books on Latin American history. She also
completed several books on Mexican history begun by Herbert Ingram Priestley, a professor at Berkeley,
before his death in 1944. Following her retirement to Berkeley, Calif., she also wrote several novels
which were never published.
Scope and Content
The Lillian Estelle Fisher Research Materials relating to Mexico consist of transcriptions from documents
housed in the Archivo General de Indias in Spain and in the Archivo General de la Nacion in Mexico city.
The materials from Spain relate to the policies adopted by the Spanish government in the late 18th
century in order to regulate the trade between the colonies and the metropolis, as well as the trade
amongst the colonies. The largest section of the collection (32 of the 47 folders), which comprises the
materials from the AGN, consists of transcriptions of documents from the ramo "Tierras" and primarily
relates to lawsuits, measurement, sales, and restitution of Indian lands.
