California.
Ruth Altman Spiegel was a social worker who was District Director for the Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles and was a
visiting assistant professor in the School of Social Welfare at UCLA from 1950-1951. Spiegel was involved in a strike between
the Social Service Employees Union and the Jewish Federation, of which the Jewish Family Service was a part. In 1951 she was
dismissed from her faculty position at UCLA for failure to sign a loyalty oath. Spiegel was active in the Non-Senate Academic
and Administrative Employees who protested the implementation of the loyalty oath requirement at the university.
The collection contains correspondence dealing with Spiegel's employement with Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles (JFS)
and her firing from UCLA. There are fliers and documents from JFS, as well as fliers, clippings and documentation relating
to the loyalty oath controversy at the University of California, particularly UCLA.
