History

The California State Beekeepers Association (CSBA) was organized in 1889 and exists "to educate the public about the beneficial aspects of honey bees, advance research beneficial to beekeeping practices, provide a forum for cooperation among beekeepers, and to support the economic and political viability of the beekeeping industry."

Scope and Content

The California State Beekeepers Association Collection spans the years of 1886-1980, with the bulk of the material falling between 1890 and 1971. The collection contains meeting minutes, correspondence, financial records, annual convention programs, printed material and other records relating to the foundation and activities of CSBA. The collection also includes realia and photographs of apiaries, beekeepers, and honey exhibition displays.

D-079, John E. Eckert Papers, 1936-1958: This collection contains correspondence, beekeeping subject files, scholarly publications, and California State Beekeepers Association publications. Eckert was a professor of Entomology at UC Davis and was a Life Member of the California State Beekeepers Association.
D-080, John S. Harbinson Papers, 1857-1920: This collection contains daybooks documenting Harbison's beekeeping activities, correspondence, deeds, business receipts and patent grants. Harbinson was one of the first beekeepers to import bees into California and inventor of innovative beehives and new methods of rearing queen bees.
D-081, Harry Hyde Laidlaw Papers, 1882-2000: This collection contains correspondence, writings, research materials, course materials, and photographs. Laidlaw, considered the "father of honey bee genetics", was a professor of Entomology at UC Davis.
D-082, John C. McCubbin Papers, 188-1934: This collection contains business correspondence, photographs, and materals relating to the California State Beekeepers Association. McCubbin was an early California beekeeper in the San Joaquin Valley.
MC082, Eric C. Mussen Collection, 1974-1990: This collection contains fourteen programs for the state beekeepers' conventions.
D-083, Max Clemens Richter Papers, 1887-1970: This collection contains correspondence, photographs, and scrapbooks relating to beekeeping, bee diseases, and queen bee breeders.
D-084, Lee H. Watkins Collection, 1939-1972: This collection contains correspondence, research notes, and research papers concerning early American beekeeping history.
D-023, Wolfskill Familly Collection, 1820-1975: This collection contains correspondence, ephemera, realia, and photographs related to John Reid Wolfskill and his family.
