Acquisition Information

The Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights Records, Addendum (ANR-2) were given to the Tobacco Control Archives by Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights in increments during 1996-97.

Organizational History

Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights (ANR) was established in 1976 as the Group Against Smoking Pollution (GASP) when several local GASP chapters across California merged and incorporated. In 1981 California GASP became Californians for Nonsmokers' Rights (CNR). CNR went national in 1986 and became ANR. ANR advocates the rights of nonsmokers. It has been involved in political campaigns in California for Propositions 5 (1977-1978), 10 (1979-1980), and 99 (1986), and against Proposition 188 (1994). ANR has put nonsmokers' rights on the national agenda, by working to ban smoking on airline flights, and upholding the Environmental Protection Agency's risk assessment of secondhand smoke as a carcinogen. ANR works with cities and counties to enact local ordinances to protect nonsmokers on the job, in restaurants and public places, and on public transportation. ANR has established a National Resource Center to provide information and technical assistance to government agencies, local advocates and the media. ANR's mission, history, and programs are described on their Web site at http://www.no-smoke.org/ .

Scope and Content of Collection

This collection, which is a continuation of the Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights Records --MSS 94-29 (1974-1994, bulk dates 1978-86), covers the period of 1980-1996 with the bulk of the materials from 1989-96. The materials in the collection document anti-smoking activities on a national and international scale, focusing primarily on legislation and litigation, although it also includes some program materials relating to California Proposition 99-funded educational projects. The collection includes clippings, correspondence, educational and promotional materials, petitions, legal documents, videotapes, and one reel of motion picture film. (The videotapes and the film were removed to the Tobacco Control Archives Videotape Collection, MSS 2000-28.) The materials in this collection fall into three overlapping series. The first series, Adminstrative Files, includes a wide variety of materials including correspondence, newsletters, petitions, legal documents, and program materials. The second series, Subject Files, comprises material from ANR's "Master File" of reference materials and is primarily made up of clippings and other ephemera. The third series, Media, contains tobacco control magazines and newsletters ( Tobacco Observer, In Time), videotapes, audio tapes and a copy of the film, "Death in the West." A large quantity of printed books and monographs were included in the donation; a few significant books included in the collection.
