Abstract: The Evelyn M. Clar Papers, 1912-1993, consist of records pertaining to Clar's work with various California organizations.
The bulk of the records relate to her work with the League of Women Voters of California. Records in the collection also document
Clar's involvement in the California Library Association, Friends of California Libraries, Friends of Sacramento Libraries,
and the League of Women Voters of Sacramento. The papers include Board of Directors records, bylaws, committee records, correspondence,
meeting and event material, program and project records, clippings, publications, and reports. Much of the material in the
collection relates to Clar's work on legislative committees and as a lobbyist in Sacramento. Records in the collection date
from 1912 to 1993, with the bulk dating from 1950 to 1970.

The Evelyn M. Clar Papers were given to The Bancroft Library by Evelyn M. Clar on December 19, 1973. Additions were made by
C. Raymond Clar on May 21, 1990, and May 16, 1995.

Biographical Information
Evelyn Mickelberry Clar was born on February 3, 1908, in Fresno, California. She grew up in Bakersfield, California, and graduated
from Kern Union High School in 1924. She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1929 with an A.B. degree
in geography. A long-time resident of Sacramento, she was married to C. Raymond Clar in 1928 and had two daughters.
Evelyn Clar was active in several California organizations for more than thirty years. She was the Northern vice-president
of the League of Women Voters of California and served the league as a member of the standing rules, legislative, and organization
committees. She also worked as the state league's first lobbyist in Sacramento during the 1950s-1960s. Clar was the vice president
and president of the Sacramento League of Women Voters and served six years on the Sacramento league board as publicity, legislative,
and section chairman.
In addition, Clar served as the chairman of the legislative committee of the California Library Association. She worked as
a legislative observer for the Friends of California Libraries, and served as vice-president, president, and newsletter editor
of the Friends of Sacramento Libraries. Clar was also on the board of directors of the Mercy Clinic for Children in Sacramento.
In 1962, she was honored as Woman of the Year by the Young Women's Christian Association of Sacramento for her community service
with the Parent-Teacher Association.
After several years of affliction with arthritis, Evelyn Clar died on December 11, 1989, at the age of 81.
Scope and Content of Collection
The Evelyn M. Clar Papers, 1912-1993, consist of records pertaining to Clar's work with various California organizations.
The bulk of the records relate to her work with the League of Women Voters of California. Records in the collection also document
Clar's involvement in the California Library Association, Friends of California Libraries, Friends of Sacramento Libraries,
and the League of Women Voters of Sacramento. The papers include Board of Directors records, bylaws, committee records, correspondence,
meeting and event material, program and project records, clippings, publications, and reports. Much of the material in the
collection relates to Clar's work on legislative committees and as a lobbyist in Sacramento. Records in the collection date
from 1912 to 1993, with the bulk dating from 1950 to 1970.
Writings by Evelyn Clar are located throughout the collection. Articles written by Clar that were published in the
California Voter and manuscripts and typescripts of talks given by Clar are located in Series 2., League of Women Voters of California. Other
writings such as legislative reports by Clar, and the California Library Association's "Handbook for Legislative Action" are
located in Series 3., Other Organizations. In Series 3 there is also a League of Women Voters of Sacramento
Voter article written by Clar.
Many publications of organizations were retained in the collection since they served as reference material to Clar and are
annotated in many cases. Publications that were separated include League of Women Voters newsletters from the national, state,
and Bay Area leagues.
