Description
Contains correspondence of various family members including Blanche Partington, Gertrude Partington Albright, and J.H.E. Partington with his wife Sarah. Blanch Partington's correspondence includes letters from many literary figures including Jack and Charmian London, Joaquin Miller, Ambrose Bierce and George Sterling as well as correspondence with other authors, actors and musicians. The papers also include writings and other family history materials including some of Blanche Partington's poetry and diaries.
Background
Partington ran a successful art school near Manchester, England. Then in 1890 he moved his family to Oakland, California where he founded the Partington School of Illustration in San Francisco. His eldest son Richard Langtry Partington (1868-1929) was his assistant at the school. J.H.E. Partington and his wife Sarah had seven children: Richard Langtry, Blanche, Gertrude, Phyllis, Kate, Edward and Jack Allan.Blanche was a music and drama critic in the San Francisco Bay Area. She was the friend and confidante of many literary figures including Ambrose Bierce, Jack London, Joaquin Miller, and George Sterling. She was also a noted Christian Science Practitioner in San Francisco.Gertrude was a painter and etcher who studied with her father as well as in Europe. She did illustrations for many national magazines including Bay Area literary magazines. Gertrude married Herman Oliver Albright in 1917, her late sister Kate's husband.Phyllis was a Metropolitan Opera Singer in New York City.Jack Allan Partington, Jr. is the son of Jack Allen Partington and grandson of J.H.E. Partington. He was a photographer.
