It includes newsletters, press releases, and other printed ephemera from the following organizations: Know, Inc. (Pittsburg, PA); Los Angeles Women's Center; N.O.W.; National Women's Political Caucus, and Women's Coalition of Orange County. Ephemera, clippings, and other records documenting political activity in response to Proposition 6 and the Equal Rights Amendment are also included.

    Biography

    Joan Ariel was a long-time staff member at the University of California (UC), active for nearly 20 years as the Women's Studies librarian at UC Irvine (UCI). Ariel also served as an instructor and the academic coordinator of Women's Studies. She was a key player in numerous UCI campus organizations and programs relating to lesbian and gay issues. She also authored the book Building Women's Studies Collections: A Resource Guide (1987). Ariel was the co-founder and first chair of the Women's Studies Section (WSS) of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) and received the ACRL WSS Career Achievement Award in 2002. Before retiring in early 2006, she served as the shared print planning manager for UC Systemwide Library Planning in the UC Office of the President.
