Abstract: The digital La Habra Old Settlers Historical Society Collection includes images portraying the early history and development of the Orange County community of La Habra, Calif. and surrounding areas from 1896 to 1964. Many of the images cover early agriculture in La Habra (ranches, farms, farmhouses, agricultural laborers, agricultural machinery and implements, farming activities, and the early citrus fruit industry). Other topics important to La Habra's economic development are also portrayed, including the Pacific Electric Railway, and images of laborers constructing railroads and roads. Images related to pioneers and early residents George Beck, Leander Hodson, Willets J. Hole, John Launer, and Stephen M. Smith are included, as well as images related to early families (the Leutwiler family, the Luehm family, the Thuet family, and the Warne family). The history of education in La Habra is portrayed through views of several public schools. Clubs important in the early life of La Habra are also covered, including the Kiwanis Club of La Habra.

Project Information

These slides were loaned to the Orange County Public Library by the La Habra Old Settlers Historical Society. The slides were digitized by the Orange County Public Library in order to preserve images of La Habra and share the area's cultural, social, and economic history. The images will be widely accessible to researchers, genealogists, community members, and the general public, and will be especially valuable to K-12 students and teachers, since they will be included in the California Digital Library's (CDL) Calisphere website. (see http://www.calisphere.universityofcalifornia.edu/ ).
The project was part of the California Local History Digital Resources Project (LHDRP), a multi-year program supported by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian. Leveraging the infrastructure of the CDL in partnership with Califa and Infopeople, the LHDRP explores a model to aggregate, preserve, and provide permanent public access to local history materials maintained by California cultural heritage institutions via a single statewide online access point. For more information about the LHDRP, see http://www.cdlib.org/inside/projects/oac/lsta/ .
Project activities spanned from August 2006 through June 2007. Activities included selection, digitization, and cataloging of a selection of photographs from the collections of the Orange County Public Library Silverado and Laguna Beach branches. Digital objects were created and cataloged using CONTENTdm, a digital asset management tool shared by LHDRP participants. The cataloging conforms to the CDL's Guidelines for Digital Objects specifications for descriptive and copyright metadata (see http://www.cdlib.org/inside/diglib/guidelines/ ).
Digitization was performed by Northern Micrographics using flatbed scanners. For each physical item, three digital image files were created: a TIFF master, a JPEG access image, and GIF thumbnail image. Digital image files conform to the CDL's Guidelines for Digital Images (see http://www.cdlib.org/inside/diglib/guidelines/bpgimages/ ).
