Scope and Content Note

This subseries contains the proposal, meeting minutes and a detailed report on the Women's Building Project. The material documents the origin of this unprecedented idea, the fears as well as the excitement of buying such a building and the monumental task of finding and fundraising for its purchase. Roma Guy, Lynn Lonidier and Linda Breckenridge formed an unofficial task force, drawing up a proposal. "Everybody liked it and nobody believed we could do it," laughed Roma. Three months of research followed, including discussions with attorneys and accountants and walking the streets of San Francisco to see what was available. A former mortuary was one possibility explored and rejected. During this time experienced fundraisers Tracy Gary and Marya Grambs became committed to the project.

This subseries contains materials regarding the Dovre Club. When San Francisco Women's Centers negotiated the purchase of the building, it was agreed that a long time neighborhood bar, The Dovre Club, could remain in its corner of the structure for a specific period of time. Trouble arose when The Woman's Building attempted to remove the Club from the building. Documents include materials related to a law suit in 1997 and many newspaper articles about the controversy.

Scope and Content Note

This series contains many of the difficult and challenging struggles and issues which faced the women running the Building. For example, heated discussions took place around whether or not to rent meeting space to groups like Women Police Officers Association. The community in which the Building is situated is the Mission- a predominantly Spanish speaking community with a long history of distrust toward police. The mission of the building had always included a commitment to being supportive of and responsive to the concerns of the surrounding neighborhood.

This series contains records on policy, planning and management of rental space, and extensive bookings for individual events arranged chronologically. These rental agreements reveal the incredible range of groups requesting rental space and reflect the range of issues of concern to the second wave feminist movement.

More than 300 community organizations rented space for their events in the Building during its first year of operation. In addition 16 women's groups became permanent tenants renting office space. These included the SF Women's Switchboard, Options for Women Over Forty, two feminist theater ensembles, Lilith and Les Nickelettes, SF Women Against Rape, Women Against Violence in Pornography and the Media, Third World Women's Alliance. The Vida Gallery, a women's art gallery opened the first year on the fourth floor.

Scope and Content Note

This series includes correspondence, planning documents, applications, photos, slides, and flyers relating to the San Francisco Women's Building's annual Arts and Crafts Fair. The Arts and Crafts Fair is the biggest annual fundraiser for the Women's Building. It has been the largest juried fair for women artists in the country. For some years it was held in the Women's Building and included in addition to arts and crafts, tarot reading, political tables, refreshments and entertainment. Products must be made and sold by women. When the fair outgrew the Woman's Building, it moved to Ft. Mason into a huge pavilion where it is held annually over two weekends just before the winter holidays. It has always been and remains a community party, where all go to meet and greet and hug as well as buy.

It starts with materials pertaining to the administration of fundraising campaigns, procedures for phone banking, mailings, bequests and grants as well as donor information. It then proceeds to large campaigns including the raising of the balloon payment of $412,000 due in 1989, a plan for self sufficiency called "A Room of One's Own," and the capital campaign. Then the series moves to specific projects needing fundraising - earthquake retrofitting, the Girls Leadership Project, and the Audre Lord Room project. Finally the series includes individual fundraising events including the annual Mile-a-thon and the Women's Leadership Reception.

This series contains documents concerning projects sponsored by the San Francisco Women's Building. The mission of the original San Francisco Women's Center (SFWC) included the intention "to be a source of information, technical assistance, and support for existing and emerging women's groups whose purpose are in keeping with those of the SFWC." Over the years the San Francisco Women's Building has sponsored hundreds of such groups sharing their non-profit status, and bulk mailing permit, as well as providing advice, consultants, workshops on development and funding. This series contains vast information on sponsored projects. It reveals the panoply of issues of concern to second wave feminists and the women's groups which were organized to address those issues. Of special note are extensive files of the Action Committee for Abortion Rights (ACAR).

Scope and Content Note

This series includes posters for various San Francisco Women's Building and other events. These posters are divided by size and then by subject area. They are remarkable for their beauty and artistry as well as for the issues they reveal. Of special note is a large butcher paper hand marked poster which had obviously been on the wall at a meeting in 1976. Titled "Women's Complex, Our Dreams," it includes a planetarium, a radio and TV station KFEM, an underground gym, taxi and bus service for women, repair shop "of everything," a green house, as well as a cafe, childcare center and office meeting and performing space. Some of these ideas were realized and some are not (as yet).
