Abstract: Roland Dennis Hussey (1897-1959) was a professor of history at UCLA (1930- ), and chairman of the History department history
(1950, 1952-54). During World War II until 1947, he was assistant chief of the Office of American Republic Affairs, and divisional
chief of the Office of Intelligence in the State Department. He wrote articles and books on Latin American history, was a
contributing editor for the
Handbook of Latin-American studies, and editor of
Hispanic-American Historical Review. The collection consists of transcripts and microfilm of documents and manuscripts relating to Hussey's historical research.
The materials are from the archives and depositories of Great Britain, Spain, and Latin America, and include an index and
Papeletes, or summaries, to many of the documents.

Biography
Hussey was born on October 13, 1897 in Milford, Massachusetts; fought in World War I; SB, Boston University, 1923; MA, Harvard
University, 1928; Ph.D, UCLA, 1930; instructor in history, assistant professor (1930-35), associate professor (1935-45), from
1945, professor, UCLA; chairman of history department (1950, 1952-54); during World War II until 1947 he was assistant chief
of the Office of American Republic Affairs, and divisional chief of the Office of Intelligence in the State Department; wrote
articles and books on Latin American history, including
Spanish reaction to foreign aggression in the Caribbean to about 1680 (1929) and
The Caracas Company, 1728-1784: a study in the history of Spanish monopolistic trade (1934); contributing editor,
Handbook of Latin-American studies; editor,
Hispanic-American Historical Review; he died on October 28, 1959.

The materials are from the archives and depositories of Spain, Great Britain, France, Colombia, Mexico and Central America
and relate to the colonial history of the Caribbean area. Included are an index and Papelettes, or summaries, to many of the
documents. The documents are arranged by depository while the Papelettes and index are arranged chronologically by date.
