Administrative Information
Acquisition Information
Transferred from the Office of the President, initially possibly in 1968 or 1970. Vol. 17-24 were transferred from the library
of the Office of the President in June 1990.
Administrative History
The University of California has received donations since its very inception in 1868; annual reports of gifts appeared in
the reports of the president and for a period in specially produced publications. These volumes, entitled "Record of Donation,"
were first assembled in 1940 by the Office of the Controller. In 1959 the Gifts and Endowments Office in the University's
systemwide assumed responsibility for compiling these reports.
Scope and Content
The reports consist of bound computer print-outs in various formats providing access to the history of the monetary value
of gifts to the University. Gifts of cash and securities especially are recorded; gifts of land, building and gifts in kind
are recorded for the early years only if the monetary value of the gift was specifically determined and recorded.
The volumes through 1955 include a listing by department benefited by the gift and also provide a complete summary by donors'
names through that year. Volumes after 1955 no longer provide information by department, although the volumes for 1955-1960
do provide cumulative totals by donor for that period. Volumes from 1960 through 1966 are year by year only.
Each volume contains a sheet which explains the coverage of the volume and an explanation of the various codes used in presenting
the information.
Volumes 17-24, covering the period 1968 to 1976 list donors alphabetically, and by means of codes explained in volume 17 identify
the use to which the gift is to be put.
