Abstract: This collection contains newspaper clippings, articles, and other material on the history of the Gage Canal, the system built
in 1898 to supply water to the city of Riverside, California. Materials in the collection cover the sale of the Gage Canal
company, various lawsuits and legal issues, and correspondence and photographs belonging to John M. Mylne, the
superintendent and engineer of the Gage Canal System.

Processing of the Gage Canal collection was completed by undergraduate students from the University of California, Riverside
as part of the Special Collections & University Archives Backlog Processing Project started in 2015. This project was funded
by the UCR Library and administered by Jessica Geiser, Collections Management Librarian.
The Gage Canal was built in the 1880s by Matthew Gage, a Canadian jeweler who filed a claim on 640 acres of land in the recently
formed agricultural settlement of Riverside, California. In order for Gage to receive the title to his claim, he was required
to bring water to the land, so he began the construction of a canal from the Santa Ana River in San Bernardino.
The Gage Canal, which eventually extended 20.13 miles, irrigated much of the city and allowed for the development of the city
of Riverside as well as the expansion of the local citrus industry.
This collection contains newspaper clippings, articles, and other material on the history of the Gage Canal, the sale of the
Gage Canal company, and various lawsuits and legal issues. Materials in the collection also include correspondence, family
diary entries, and photographs belonging to John M. Mylne, the superintendent and engineer of the
Gage Canal System.
