Background

Scope and content:

The collection contains papers, books, ephemera, objects and photographs created by ancestors of Dorothy Baker Crum. Of note are several photographs taken by the donor's grandfather, James Mullen, during the Civil War, and editions of The Daily Citizen newspaper printed on wallpaper during the siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi. The collection also includes a manuscript of reminiscences of early California days written by Almarin B. Paul.

Biographical / historical:

Dorothy Mullen Baker Crum (1907 - 1993) graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1930. Her grandfather, James Mullen, was a successful professional photographer who was first commissioned by the Union Army to document the progress of the Civil War, and then later operated a photography business in Lexington, Kentucky. Mullen's cousin, Almarin Paul, who drafted the collection's manuscript on Gold Rush era California history, was an important figure in the early growth of the state.
