Biography/History
Edward Windsor Kemble was an illustrator and writer born on January 18, 1861 in Sacramento, California. He grew up and attended
public school in New York City, and began contributing illustrations and cartoons to magazines and weekly periodicals in 1881.
His work was published in
Collier's,
Harper's Weekly,
Life,
Scribner's,
Century and
Leslie's Weekly. In 1883 Kemble illustrated the original edition of Mark Twain's
Huckleberry Finn. He illustrated a number of works including
Uncle Tom's Cabin,
Pudd'nhead Wilson, and
Colonel Carter of Cartersville. Among the books he authored are
Kemble's Coons (1896),
Comical Coons (1898), and
A Pickaninny Calendar (1900). He died on September 19, 1933.
