Biographical Information:
Democrat Jim Bates was first involved in San Diego politics in 1971, serving as a member of the San Diego City Council until
1974. From 1975 to 1982 he served as chairman of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. In 1982 he won election as U.S.
Representative of California, District 44, and has served on numerous House committees and subcommittees. Bates lost his
seat as Representative in November, 1990.

Scope and Contents
The
Jim Bates Papers contains files from several of the committees and subcommittees Bates served on, as well as from some of his more well-known
bills: specifically the subcommittee on Procurement and Printing, and the subjects of Navy procurement fraud, the Rural Electrification
Administration's loan program, and emergency care for trauma victims. The collection contains information on bills which
Bates supported, and gives quarterly histories of his actions and accomplishments from 1975-90. The collection consists of
correspondence, memoranda, reports, and public relations files.
