Abstract: The Margaret Elizabeth McIntosh Black Collection consists of photographs, tintypes,
correspondence, and artifacts. McIntosh Black graduated from the California State Normal School in December of
1884. The collection features several photographs and tintypes, including one of Minnie Palmer, the famous stage actress.
The collection also contains correspondence related to the class of 1884's 50th reunion in 1934.
The collection has been organized into a single series: Photographs and Ephemera, 1880s-1934 [bulk 1880-1884].

Biographical History
Margaret Elizabeth McIntosh of Boca, Nevada, graduated with the 27th class of the California State Normal
School in December of 1884. In April of 1885 she returned to Boca, Nevada where she opened a school and taught
there until 1886. From April 1886-June 1890, and again from March 1893-c.1895, she taught in Reno, Nevada. In
1897 she married Francis M. Black of Vancouver, British Columbia. Between her marriage in 1897 and her death in
1945 she lived in several places throughout Canada, including Nelson, B.C.; Winnipeg, Manitoba; Calgary, Alberta;
and Vancouver, B.C. She attended her 50th class reunion in June of 1934. The collection was donated to the San Jose
State College archives in 1969 by her daughter Charlotte S. Black.

This collection contains photographs, tintypes, correspondence, and artifacts of
California State Normal School alumna Margaret Elizabeth McIntosh Black, who graduated from the school in December
of 1884. The photographs and tintypes date to approximately the 1880s. In addition, there is one letter from 1934 concerning
the 50th college reunion and a list of attendees.

Series Scope and Content Summary
This series consists of photographs, tintypes, and correspondence of Margaret Elizabeth McIntosh
Black, who graduated from the California State Normal School in December of 1884. The photographs and tintypes
date approximately to her years as a student at the California State Normal School. This collection also provides a small
sample of documentation on the class of 1884's 50th reunion in 1934. In addition, one of the photographs is a studio portrait
of Minnie Palmer, the famous stage actress.
