Abstract: The Willard O. Mishoff Library Science Literature Collection 1875 - 1967 (bulk 1920-1959) contains a variety of published
and unpublished materials disseminated to American libraries and practicing librarians to aid them in collection development,
reference, circulation, and cataloging services. Typical items include bibliographies, manuals, monographs, pamphlets, and
periodicals. Additional materials include commemorative literature from library dedications and promotional literature for
the public on the value of libraries and their resources. This collection consists of one series: Series I. Library Science
Literature, 1875-1967.

Biographical History
Willard O. Mishoff (1896-1980) led a career as an academic and research librarian. From 1938 to 1943 he served as Director
of the University of Central Missouri Library, and from 1943 to 1958 he served as a library specialist for the U.S. Office
of Education. Later, he worked as a faculty member in the library science program at Mississippi State College for Women.
From 1962 to 1966 he taught classes in reference and bibliography at San Jose State College.

Series Scope and Content Summary
This collection provides a historical representation of publications on library science theory and practice from 1920 to 1959.
It contains bibliographies, book and library supply catalogs, book lists, bulletins, circulars, conference papers and proceedings,
directories, dissertation abstracts, encyclopedia reprints, event programs, guides, handbooks, indexes, lesson books, leaflets,
library dedication literature, manuals, monographs, pamphlets, periodicals, reader's advisory publications, reading lists,
statistical and study reports, and workshop booklets. Many materials were published to help American librarians organize
and develop collections, expand and improve reference service and library circulation, and develop skills in indexing and
cataloging. Some items discuss the management of special services such as children's collections and company, hospital, and
Army libraries. Additional materials include academic library usage manuals, statistical reports on libraries by region,
published standards of service, materials on records preservation, manuals concerning book binding and repair, and literature
for the public on the value of libraries.
